Portable or desktop?
First decide whether you need mobile use or a fixed workstation. MacBook, iMac and desktop Macs have different screen, transport and accessory requirements.
Plan desktop accessories
A desktop Mac does not automatically include a monitor and input devices. Check existing connections and budget for necessary cables, adapters and peripherals.
Generation and software
Compare model year and chip with your software requirements. For older devices, supported macOS versions and application features are especially important.
Applications before model names
Base performance needs on your projects. Photo, video, music and development applications use CPU, GPU and memory differently; a bigger model name alone does not decide usefulness.
