Reset your Mac's SMC

Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) can resolve certain issues related to power, battery, fans, and other functions.

How do I reset the SMC?

Resetting the SMC works slightly differently depending on the model.

Here I describe how this works on different models!

Mac Mini, Mac Pro and iMac:

For the devices, it is enough to simply disconnect the device from the mains by pulling out the power cable, i.e. unplugging it.

Unplug the power cable and wait 15 seconds. Then plug the power cable back in and wait again for 5 seconds. Now the device can be switched on and the SMC has been reset.

Macbook and MacBook Pro with removable battery:

1. Turn off the Mac.

2. Take out the battery.

3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.

4. Put the battery back in.

5. Press the power button to turn on the Mac.

MacBook and MacBook Pro & Air (without T2 chip):

1. Turn off the Mac.

2. On the integrated keyboard, press and hold all of the following keys:

  • Shift key  on the left side of the keyboard
  • Ctrl key  on the left side of the keyboard
  • Option (Alt)  on the left side of the keyboard
  • Hold all three buttons and also press and hold the power button.

MacBook and MacBook Pro & Air (with T2 chip):

1.Turn off the Mac.

2. On the built-in keyboard, press and hold all of the following keys. Your Mac may turn on.

    • Ctrl key  on the left side of the keyboard
    • Option (Alt)  on the left side of the keyboard
    • Shift  on the right side of the keyboard

  • 3. Press and hold all three buttons for 7 seconds, then press and hold the power button. If the Mac is on, it will turn off if you hold down the keys.
